Biohacking Hair Health

Biohacking Hair Health Starts With Focusing on Holistic Well-Being

Heads up: Most hair-related beauty tips focus solely on your locks, but research has proven that there is much more to it. The health of your hair actually has a lot to do with your hair structure, scalp microbiome, and growth cycles.

Hair Issues Can Indicate Poor Health

When it comes to physical appearance, the condition of your hair plays a significant role in your self-perception and self-confidence. Beyond the physical level, your hair can be used as a valuable tool to determine your overall health status. It serves as a visual representation of any underlying health challenges you may have going on in your body.

Dryness, thinning, and accelerated graying can all be signs that there are some underlying issues within the body.

Biohacking hair involves multiple components, but before delving into them, it’s crucial to assess the current status of your hair. Factors such as nutrition, stress, inflammation, hormones, and hair products all play a key role in hair health. Before we look at specifics, let’s start by discussing the fundamentals of hair growth.

A Closer Look at Hair Structure

Each individual hair strand consists of a shaft and a root. The hair shaft is the visible part of the hair that we see coming out of the skin. The hair root, on the other hand, is located in the deeper layers of the skin and is surrounded by the hair follicle, which is a tiny, complex structure that plays an important role in hair growth. The hair follicle is very responsive to various factors, such as stress levels, nutrition status, hormones, supplements/medications, and overall scalp health.1

Biohack Your Hair Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle consists of three stages that repeat over time. The first stage, known as the anagen phase or growth phase, is when hair actively grows. At any point in time, most of the hair on your head is in the growth phase, which lasts about two to six years. The second stage is called the catagen phase, which is a transitional phase that lasts for about two to four weeks. The hair then enters the third stage, called the telogen or resting phase, which can last several months, during which the hair remains within the follicle and is gradually pushed out of the skin before eventually falling out. These are the hairs that you usually find in your hair brush. A new active hair will then form in the follicle and a new growth cycle begins.1

Biohacking Scalp Health

Caring for Your Scalp Is the Key To Biohacking Hair Health

Unless you’ve shaved off all your hair — and you’re likely not reading this if you did — you probably haven’t thought much about what’s happening under your locks. However, your scalp is literally the root of healthy hair.

Woman lathering up her hair with healthy scalp shampoo.

Healthy Hair Requires a Healthy Scalp

There is substantial evidence to support the notion that the condition of the scalp plays an important role in the natural growth and retention of hair. In light of this, it makes sense that scalp care is an essential aspect of promoting hair quality and hair growth.1

Biohack Your Hair By Caring For Your Scalp Microbiome

Let’s take a minute to talk about the human microbiome. The microbiome is a collection of trillions of microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria, which exist in or on a particular part of the body, such as the gastrointestinal tract or on the skin. While we know that certain bacteria are linked to diseases, others are vital for our immune system, digestion, mental health, weight, and many other aspects of our overall well-being.

The “good” microbes that exist in and on the body protect us from harmful pathogens. However, they can undergo changes due to various factors, such as diet, exercise, external environment, medications, and exposure to certain triggers.8

So, what does this have to do with your hair health? Well, similar to the microbiomes found on your skin and in your gastrointestinal system, your scalp also harbors its own microbiome, which is an extremely important part of keeping your hair healthy.9

When the microbiome of your scalp experiences a disruption, various issues can arise, including dandruff,7 itchy skin, rashes, dryness, irritation, potential hair loss, and more. In order to prevent these problems, it’s important to maintain the right balance of yeast and bacteria.

Tips For Biohacking Scalp Health

So, how can we support our scalp to promote healthy hair? Here are some tips:

  • Get regular scalp massages. Doing so stimulates the bulbs that nourish the strands, and promotes the overall health and well-being of the roots.3
  • Wash oily hair more frequently and drier/chemically treated hair less frequently.4
  • When washing your hair, concentrate shampoo mostly on the scalp and conditioner mostly at the tips of the hair.4
  • Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are specifically formulated for your hair type. Get an assessment from a professional if you aren’t sure.4
  • Exfoliate your scalp 1-2 times per week to get rid of buildup, increase hair fullness, and control yeast levels that can damage follicles.1
  • Avoid hair care products and procedures with harsh chemicals or bleach.5
  • Avoid heat as much as possible. When you do use heat, lower the temperature on your styling tools.4
  • Use a probiotic to improve the skin microbiome, thus promoting a healthy scalp.6
Look Inside and In Your Environment For Healthy Hair

Now, as previously mentioned, there are several factors that contribute to the development of a healthy head of hair. Moreover, it’s important to be mindful of elements that can be detrimental to both the hair and scalp. These factors include extrinsic factors (originating from the environment) as well as intrinsic factors (originating from within the body).

Environmental factors include:

  • Pollution and toxins
  • Hair styling products
  • Oxidative stress
  • UV exposure

Intrinsic factors include:

  • Increased stress and cortisol levels
  • Hormonal issues
  • Genetics
  • Nutritional deficiencies and diet
  • Inflammation
  • Illness and disease2

Balding & Regression

Both Men and Women Can Limit Hair Loss With These Biohacks

Thanks to new scientific findings on epigenetics, we now know that we are not destined to experience the same balding patterns as our parents. This means you’re in charge. Adopt these lifestyle choices and treatments for a healthy head of hair.

Top of man's head, half is bald, other half with short hair.

Hair Loss Often Starts With Lifestyle Choices

It’s a common misconception that balding and regression only occur in men as they age. In reality, around 40% of women experience female pattern hair loss by the time they reach the age of 50.1

The first step in solving this issue is identifying the underlying cause. Below are some of the various factors that affect hair loss:

Hereditary Hair Loss

Globally, the most prevalent cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, also known as male-pattern hair loss or female-pattern hair loss. With this condition, inherited genes cause hair follicles to shrink, ultimately causing your hair to stop growing.2

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair loss anywhere on the body. This condition develops when the body’s immune system attacks its own hair follicles.2

Stressors

Trauma to the nervous system, whether it is emotional, physiological, or mental, can also contribute to hair loss. Various factors such as illness, infections, cancer treatments, surgery, childbirth, or experiencing the loss of a loved one can all impact hair health.2

Hair Care

Using harsh chemicals and dyes on your hair may cause damage and fragility, resulting in thinning hair over time.9 In addition, certain hairstyles, for example, pulling your hair back tightly over an extended period of time, can also cause permanent hair loss.2

Hormonal Imbalance, Nutrient Deficiencies, or Medications

A hormonal imbalance can contribute to thinning or hair loss in women. Thyroid issues can also be a cause, as well as certain nutritional deficiencies (such as biotin, iron, protein, and zinc). Additionally, certain medications may also cause hair loss as a side effect.2

Biohacking Hair Loss: Treatments Available

Now, once we have gained an understanding of some of the different causes of hair loss and regression, how do we prevent further hair loss and restore the lost hair? The first step is to identify the root of the cause, which may require a professional assessment. Once you know what is causing your hair loss, the good news is that there are several approaches available to address the issue.

Depending on the cause of your hair loss, several non-invasive treatments can help you accomplish the hair goals you want to achieve.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a procedure which involves pricking the skin with small, sterilized needles to cause minor punctures in the skin. This is done to initiate the body’s wound-healing process, increasing growth factors in the skin that act to encourage the production of collagen in the dermis. When done on the scalp, this procedure has been shown to possibly promote hair growth and may be a potential method of treatment for those with alopecia areata or androgenic alopecia.3

Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy, also known as red light therapy, has been shown to encourage circulation and stimulation to the hair follicles to grow hair.4

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Injections

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections involve utilizing a person’s own blood sample to stimulate hair growth and promote healing in a specific area. Plasma, the liquid component of blood, contains platelets that facilitate blood clotting and possess growth factors that promote regeneration and healing. During the procedure, the PRP is injected into targeted areas of the scalp using a syringe.

Stem cells, which are basic building block cells, can be taken from a person’s own fat tissue to encourage healing and promote hair growth. Often, a combination of both of these minimally invasive therapies is used to foster the regeneration of hair growth.5

Medications

Depending on the type of hair loss and the results of a professional assessment, various medications may be recommended. For women, these may include medications such as minoxidil, which is also known by the brand name Rogaine®, corticosteroid injections, Spironolactone, prostaglandin analogs, peptide therapies, and other suitable options.6

Nutritional Supplementation

Studies indicate that several forms of hair loss are associated with oxidative stress and micronutrient deficiencies. Zinc has been shown to improve hair growth, along with antioxidants from the Vitamin E family, omega-3 and omega-6 combinations (such as fish oil), blackcurrant seed oil, and lycopene.7 Furthermore, a study demonstrated that pumpkins seed oil capsules, capsaicin, and isoflavone encouraged hair growth, as did multi-ingredient commercial formulations such as tocotrienol, pantogar, viviscal, nourkrin, nutrafol, and lamdapil.8

Hair Transplantation

A hair transplant procedure involves the transfer of hairs from the back of the head to the balding area. There are two main techniques used for hair transplant surgery: follicular unit transplant (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).

“Combination treatments that involve a mechanical stimulus and a chemical stimulus are always going to be better than either one alone.”

Support Your Hair Health Goals With Advanced Beauty Supplements

We’ve combed the aisles for the best supplements for beautiful hair without brushing past the research. Biohackers who want to grow strong, luscious locks should integrate these practices.

Check For Deficiencies For Underlying Issues

Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of nutritional supplementation for hair growth and hair quality. That said, it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare practitioner before introducing any supplements into your regimen in order to ensure that they are suitable for your specific needs.

Probiotics

As we know, the scalp has its own microbiome, and any disturbances in this delicate ecosystem can lead to various issues that impact hair health.1 Research indicates that probiotics can aid in reestablishing microbiome homeostasis, consequently improving scalp and hair health. More specifically, a study highlighted the positive effects of the strain Lactobacillus reuteri on hair quality.2

Silicone, Zinc, and Vitamin E

Silicon supplements have also been shown to contribute to hair heath.3 Moreover, zinc has been shown to improve hair growth, while antioxidants from the Vitamin E family, as well as combinations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (such as fish oil), blackcurrant seed oil, and lycopene, also exhibit beneficial effects.4

Pumpkin Seed Oil and Commercial Compounds

In addition, a study revealed that pumpkin seed oil capsules, capsaicin, and isoflavone have been found to stimulate hair growth. Various multi-ingredient commercial formulations, including tocotrienol, pantogar, viviscal, nourkrin, nutrafol, and lamdapil, have also shown encouraging results in promoting hair growth.5

Iron Supplements

Hair loss associated with iron deficiency may be non-scarring, indicating potential for hair follicle recovery. Therefore, iron supplementation may be recommended (as always, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare practitioner regarding iron supplementation).

“Hair supplements may help to support hair growth and hair health in people who have a deficiency or suboptimal levels of certain nutrients.”

Biohacking Beauty with …

Harnessing the power of sound or silence for a restful sleep and renewed energy for tomorrow.

  • What are some key factors that contribute to healthy, luscious hair?

Several factors contribute to healthy, luscious hair. Proper nutrition is essential, as a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein supports hair health. Maintaining a clean and balanced scalp, avoiding excessive heat and chemical damage, and practicing gentle hair care routines also play a significant role. Additionally, managing stress levels, staying hydrated, and addressing hormonal imbalances can positively impact hair quality.

  • How can biohacking techniques improve hair health and promote hair growth?

Biohacking techniques can improve hair health and promote hair growth by addressing underlying factors that contribute to hair issues. This may include optimizing nutrition to provide essential nutrients for hair growth, incorporating scalp massages to stimulate blood flow and nourish hair follicles, and using natural hair care products free from harsh chemicals that can strip hair of its natural oils. Additionally, biohacking techniques may involve managing stress, addressing hormonal imbalances, and incorporating targeted supplements to support hair health.

  • What are some effective strategies for maintaining a healthy scalp?

Strategies for maintaining a healthy scalp include regular cleansing to remove excess oil, dirt, and product buildup. Gentle exfoliation using a scalp scrub or brush can help remove dead skin cells and improve circulation. Keeping the scalp hydrated and moisturized with natural oils or scalp serums can also support overall scalp health. Additionally, avoiding harsh hair products, protecting the scalp from excessive sun exposure, and addressing any underlying scalp conditions are important for maintaining a healthy scalp.

  • What are some common causes of hair loss and how can they be biohacked?

Common causes of hair loss or baldness include hormonal imbalances, genetics, nutritional deficiencies, and scalp conditions. Biohacking approaches for addressing hair loss may involve managing stress levels, optimizing nutrition to support hair follicle health, incorporating targeted supplements like biotin or saw palmetto, and using FDA-approved treatments like minoxidil or finasteride. Additionally, addressing underlying scalp conditions, such as dandruff or inflammation, can contribute to promoting hair growth.

  • Can incorporating specific supplements support hair health and promote hair growth?

Yes, specific supplements can support hair health and promote hair growth. Biotin, a B-vitamin, is commonly associated with promoting hair growth and strength. Other supplements like collagen peptides, zinc, iron, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids can also support hair follicle health and overall hair quality. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements to ensure they are appropriate for individual needs.

  • How does scalp massage contribute to hair growth and improve hair quality?

Scalp massage contributes to hair growth and improves hair quality by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles. Increased blood circulation delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, promoting healthy hair growth. Scalp massage can also help relax the scalp, reduce tension, and support overall scalp health. Incorporating gentle massage techniques, such as fingertip massage or using a scalp massage tool, can be beneficial for enhancing hair quality and stimulating hair growth.

  • Can the use of cold therapy, such as cold scalp treatments, promote healthier hair?

Cold therapy, including cold showers or cold scalp treatments, can potentially promote healthier hair. Cold temperatures constrict blood vessels, reducing inflammation and potentially improving scalp health. Cold showers or rinsing the hair with cold water after washing can also help seal the hair cuticles, leading to smoother and shinier hair. However, individual results may vary, and it’s important to find a balance that works for each person’s hair type and preference.

  • What role do lifestyle factors play in maintaining healthy and beautiful hair?

Lifestyle factors, including diet and stress management, play a significant role in maintaining healthy and beautiful hair. A well-rounded diet rich in essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals, provides the building blocks for hair growth and strength. Managing stress levels is crucial, as stress can contribute to hair loss and affect the hair growth cycle. Engaging in stress-reducing activities, practicing relaxation techniques, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle overall support hair health and promote beautiful hair.

  • How can adopting a gentle hair care routine help improve hair quality and damage?

Adopting a gentle hair care routine is important for improving hair quality and preventing damage. This includes using sulfate-free and mild shampoos, avoiding excessive heat styling and chemical treatments, and limiting the use of harsh hair products. Gently detangling wet hair with a wide-toothed comb, using a soft microfiber towel to dry hair, and avoiding aggressive brushing can help minimize breakage and maintain hair health. Treating the hair with care and using protective measures contribute to beautiful and healthy hair.

  • Can the biohacking of hair also involve embracing natural textures?

Absolutely! Biohacking hair can involve embracing natural textures and reducing reliance on heat styling. Frequent or excessive use of heat styling tools can damage the hair, making it more prone to breakage and dryness. By embracing and enhancing natural textures, individuals can reduce the need for heat styling and opt for more protective and nurturing hairstyles. This allows the hair to retain its natural moisture and strength, contributing to healthier and more beautiful hair.
