  2. Learn a Musical Instrument: Learning to play a new instrument increases brain volume by creating more connectivity and better communication between brain regions.10 Therapeutic benefits which result from playing music include better communication skills, improved emotional release, and decreased anxiety and irritability.11
  3. Learn a New Sport: New physical activity stimulates the motor cortex which increases connections in the area of our brain related to motor control and memory.12 Pickleball, anyone?

Brain stimulation has been used for decades to treat different forms of mental illness. Over time, the treatment has evolved into a range of different types focused on addressing issues from mental health to more recently improving cognitive function and learning. Today, many forms of brain stimulation can be done at home, making it an easy treatment option to use on a regular basis.

Brain stimulation techniques work by modulating neural activity in specific regions of the brain through using a mild electrical or magnetic current. The idea is that these currents can help heal the brain’s electrical systems. There are various types of stimulation, each with slight differences in technique and targeted brain regions.1

How to Help the Brain Complete Complex Tasks

Brain stimulation can provide significant benefits for learning by improving cognitive function, memory retention, and overall performance. These techniques work by modulating neural activity in specific brain regions, thereby improving synaptic plasticity and neural network connectivity.2 Research has also demonstrated that brain stimulation can boost creativity and problem-solving skills.3

Studies show that brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), can improve learning and memory in healthy adults.4 These techniques can also improve cognitive function and working memory in individuals with cognitive impairments.5 In another study, 40 subjects who underwent transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) during a learning task demonstrated enhanced learning of multiple complex tasks.6 They also found that retention was supported after treatment.

Try At-Home and In-Office Brain Stimulation Treatments
  1. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): A version of brain stimulation that uses an electromagnetic coil placed against your scalp.7 It has been traditionally used for treating depression when conventional treatments aren’t effective.
  2. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS): A portable wearable device that produces a low electric current directed to the scalp.2 It has demonstrated benefits for anxiety, depression, and potentially learning.
  3. Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (tRNS): This technique uses a weak alternating current that oscillates at random frequencies and is delivered through the scalp with a pair of electrodes.8 It has been used to help reset repetitive patterns in the brain such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears).9
